The leaders who sustain and grow a company early on are not the same people who will take it to the level beyond fifty employees. Most early-stage managers are Jacks-of-all-trades, good at a lot of things and experts at very few.

As a business hits the middle stages, it needs managers who are masters of a specific skill who can implement processes and guide investments in their areas of expertise. While every employee who helped build the company should be treated with respect, loyalty to the organization overtakes loyalty to individuals if the company is going to continue to grow.
